Aslan Karatsev v Roberto Carballes-Baena Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between the 29 year old Karatsev, and the Spaniard, who is a year older.

Karatsev Breezes into the Second Round

Karatsev had only been further than the first round of the US once before, and, drawn against the world number 29, Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic, he must have expected he was in for a tough day’s work if he was to improve on that.

As things transpired, though, it turned out to be a very comfortable day at the office.

Although he was the first to face, and save, break points, it would not be long before Karatsev broke Lehecka for the first time, and he claimed the first set with a second.

Serve dominated the second set, but when Lehecka offered up a break opportunity, Karatsev needed no second invitation to take it.

When Karatsev found himself two breaks to the good in the third set, the match was as good as over. Lehecka did threaten a brief comeback by clawing one of them back, but Karatsev underlined his dominance by breaking him once more to wrap up the match.

Carballes-Baena Knocks Out Fourth Seed

Carballes-Baena provided one of the major shocks of the opening round of the US Open by knocking out the fourth seed, Helger Rune of Denmark.

Even going into the contest, there were signs that all was not well with the Dane. He had only played two matches since reaching the last eight of Wimbledon, and was short of competitive practice.

And he was unhappy that his contest with Carballes-Baena was assigned to court five.

The Spaniard took full advantage of his opponent’s problems to seize an early initiative, two breaks giving him the first set.

Both men made a poor start to the second set, but a flurry of dropped serves left Rune a break up, and he forgot his problems long enough to level the match.

However, they soon mounted up again and he needed a medical time-out, whilst, on the court, Carballes-Baena was warming to his task again with an early break in the third set. Ruen did recover it, only to immediately drop his serve again.

By this time, the Spaniard could smell the blood in the water, and he cruised through the fourth set to victory, breaking the Dane twice, whilst being untroubled on his own serve.

Karatsev v Carballes-Baena Prediction and Tip

This should be a close match between two men who do not have a good record in this tournament.

Both enjoyed comfortable first round victories against higher ranked players, although their opponents differed in type.

Karatsev may start the marginal favourite because Carballes-Baena is regarded more as a clay court player, but it would be no surprise if this match went to five sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Karatsev to win: 2/7 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 36.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
