Liudmila Samsonova took on native player Claire Liu in the opening round of the US Open and proved better, beating her in two sets. The match was pretty close and competitive, as one of the sets finished in the tiebreak. Playing Americans at the US Open is always tough but Samsonova produced a signature effort.
Six aces and 25 winners is a pretty good effort from Samsonova, certainly a bit above average for the Russian. She’s a pretty good fit for the US Open because of her serve and the ability to play attacking tennis.
The danger for Samsonova is just her lack of consistency. It can vary wildly even in matches, let alone in events that last two weeks. Korpatsch can be a tricky matchup because she’s pretty competitive in rallies, and doesn’t let much go so Samsonova will need to bring her best effort.
Even so, she’s the far better player and should cruise with a decent effort.

Korpatsch Stuns Begu
Tamara Korpatsch stunned a pretty good player in the opening round, which can be described as an upset. As a player who does most of her damage on the Tour on clay, hard courts can be a tricky thing for her. Her style can be a good fit or a bad fit, depending on the matchup.
What worked against Begu so well was her ability to get many balls back. She was like a wall, and Begu flamed out completely, committing 40 unforced errors.
She can adopt the same tactic against Samsonova, and it could work. The Russian loves to hit the ball hard and loves to dictate play. If Korpatsch can catch her on a bad day and send many balls back she might just see a similar flameout to that of Begu.
Korpatsch also served well against Begu and that would greatly help to break up any rhythm Samsonova does find.
Samsonova v Korpatsch Prediction and Tip
This is a very interesting one and I think there is value in backing Korpatsch to create some havoc. I’d take the over mostly over anything else as I think it’s the most likely.
