Cirstea looks like she is having a second wind to her career with the Romanian having improving from a season low ranking of 83rd in the world to her current 30th.
It was her performances at the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open which helped her leapfrog her rankings and then a title win at the Reus Open on the WTA 125 circuit added the icing to the cake.
Coming into the US Open, Cirstea had had a few struggles with losses in the second round at the Washington Open, Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open but the manner in which she won her opener here tells you that things are back on track for the Romanian number one.
Cirstea eased to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kayla Day, needing only an hour and 16 minutes to make it through. She was broken once but broke right back in the second set to find a way to the win.

Kalinskaya Eases Past Siniakova
Kalinskaya was returning from her fitness woes that had kept her out of action for three and a half months and one expected a bit of rustiness from her. Instead, Kalinskaya found a way to get past Katerina Siniakova in straight sets to enter round two.
And what she would now want to do is continue building her form as she looks to improve her WTA Rankings.
If anything, Kalinskaya can take a lot of inspiration from her opponent in this encounter as she looks to claw her way back from outside the top 80 back to her career best of 51st.
Cirstea has done better than that this season and if Kalinskaya can take a page out of her opponent’s book, overcome her and continue on her merry path at this tournament, she would have taken those first few steps towards getting back to her best.
