Matteo Berrettini v Arthur Rinderknech Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between the 27 year old Italian, and the Frenchman, who is a year older.

Berrettini has an excellent record in this tournament. In 2019, he became the first Italian in the open era to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam, and he followed that up by getting to the quarter- finals in 2021, and, again last year.

And he got his latest campaign underway with a convincing display against the number 29 seed Ugo Humbert of France.

The dye was cast from the very first game of the match when Humbert dropped his serve, Berrettini consolidating his advantage to take the first set. And then two successive breaks enabled him to take the second set as well, conceding just two games in the course of it.

Humbert’s resistance was broken by this time, and two more breaks enabled the Italian to wrap up the match, without exceeding too much energy.

Rinderknech Beats Disappointing Argentine

Rinderknech has a much more modest Grand Slam record, but he has equalled his previous best in New York by reaching the second round. Arguably, he had a kind draw, pitted against Diego Schwartzman, who has been a shadow recently of the player who used to regularly feature in the top ten.

One dropped serve from the Argentine was enough for Rinderknech to take the first set. And it was the same story in the second set, as Rinderknech tightened his grip on the match.

Schwartzman’s residual chances all but evaporated when, having saved four break points, he dropped his serve again at the start of the third set.
