On a day when most Aussie players bit the dust at the US Open, de Minaur proved to be one saving grace for the nation. But even as he overcame Timofey Skatov in his opener, he was stretched to four sets by an opponent who was 12/1 odds (with bet365) to win going into the match.
In a match lasting two hours and 40 minutes, de Minaur lost his serve a whopping four times but still won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. He could have wrapped it up a tad earlier when he served for the match at 5-3 in the fourth set but Skatov managed to pull one back.
Two games later, however, de Minaur broke his opponent for the eighth and final time to claim the win.
De Minaur will now hope to emulate his previous year’s third round showing as he starts off a 3/10 favourite to win it with bet365. That being said, he would like to go a lot deeper after the kind of form that he has shown in the lead-up to the US Open having made the final of the Los Cabos Open and the Canadian Masters.

Yibing Edges Fighting Lajovic
In a match that lasted five sets and nearly three hours, Yibing was put to the sword by Dusan Lajovic in his second US Open appearance.
The Chinese player had entered this tournament on the back of some inconsistent performances in the season. Yibing had won his maiden ATP title in Dallas but followed that up with a very poor set of results that had seen his ranking plummet from 54th to 86th.
And after being broken five times in the first and third set by Lajovic, Yibing found himself at the possibility of another early defeat.
Kudos to Yibing then to break Lajovic once in the fourth set and two more times in the fifth while facing no break-points in the process. He came 3-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to set up this meeting with de Minaur.
