Jannik Sinner v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Sinner has won them both. Both these matches came in 2023 itself, at Montpellier and at Halle.

Sinner Blasts Hanfmann Away

In a match that failed to interest the neutral tennis fan, Sinner proved his class with a straightforward win over Yannick Hanfmann.

Sinner saved all four of the break-points he faced in his opener to carve out a 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 victory, overcoming his opponent’s serve on six occasions.

A quarterfinalist at the US Open last year, Sinner went into top gear very early in the encounter as he broke Hanfmann in the very second game of the opening set. While he missed four more break-points in the set, Sinner then broke Hanfmann three times in the second set and twice in the third to clinch his second round berth.

This comes on the back of his maiden ATP 1000 title in Toronto earlier this month which was followed by an exhausted Sinner losing his opener at the Cincinnati Masters.

No surprises he starts off a 1/6 favourite with bet365 to win this against his fellow Italian.

Sonego Has No Trouble against Moreno De Alboran

Nicolas Moreno De Alboran has never been ranked better than 130th in the world and he had come into this tournament having never made it to the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament before this.

Three, hard-fought qualifying wins gave him that chance at the US Open but Sonego proved to be good for his American opponent.

Sonego, who is looking to break back into the top 30 after being a world number 21 at one point in his career, registered a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over Moreno De Alboran to move into the second round.

Having never featured in the second round of the US Open since 2019, Sonego lost his serve twice in the match – both of which came in the second set – but he was never in a serious danger of losing.

The only time he might have faced some nerves was in the second set at 4-4 but he broke his opponent immediately after and served it out to love.

Sonego now has a mountain of a task ahead of him as he starts off a 19/4 underdog with bet365 to win this.

Sinner v Sonego Prediction and Tip

With Sonego having generally struggled at the US Open and Sinner having shown his mettle over time, this seems to be a fairly straightforward one for the world number six. Straight sets.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 6/5 (with bet365)
