Tomas Etcheverry v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at Wimbledon earlier this year and Wawrinka had won that second round match in four sets.

Etcheverry Stretched to Five by Virtanen

Etcheverry hasn’t done too much of note outside of clay court competitions but he was a 11/20 favourite with bet365 going into his first round match against Otto Virtanen. Virtanen, a player ranked 133rd in the world, had come through to the main draw by winning his qualifiers.

Less than 40 minutes into the encounter, Etcheverry looked to be on his way to a comfortable win when he claimed the first set and in a few more minutes after that, was serving to win the second at 5-4.

From that point onward, however, things turned around as Virtanen broke right back there and clinched the set in the following tie-breaker. And he went on to overpower Etcheverry’s serve three more times in the third set to take a two sets to one lead.

An early break in the fourth helped Etcheverry draw level but he failed to take the same advantage in the fifth when Viratanen came back from 2-4 down to force a tie-breaker. Fortunately for the Argentine he was able counter his opponent in the following tie-breaker to win just his second hardcourt match of the season.

Can he overturn the 9/4 winning odds (with bet365) on offer in round two?

Wawrinka Trumps Nishioka

In a match lasting two and a half hours, Wawrinka was able to counter a rampaging Yoshihito Nishioka to register a straight-set opening win.

Wawrinka was unable to find a way past Nishioka’s serve in a fascinating first set where neither player earned even a break-point. With Wawrinka winning the following tie-breaker, the momentum swung drastically in the second as he broke Nishioka three times before grabbing the match by breaking him once in the third.

This follows Wawrinka’s only appearance on the North American hardcourt swing earlier this month in Cincinnati where he had made the third round.

As a result of that, Wawrinka broke into the top 50, having never been ranked this high since October 2021. Can he now make it to the third round at this tournament having never done that since 2019 either?

Wawrinka starts off a 2/5 favourite here (with bet365).

Etcheverry v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

While Etcheverry showed he is up for a fight in the opener he won’t find the same kind of chances coming his way against Wawrinka. Backing Wawrinka to win and probably do that in straight sets too.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Wawrinka to win: 2/5 (with bet365)
  • High Risk Tip: Wawrinka to win in straight sets: 12/5 (with bet365)
