Andrey Rublev v Gael Monfils Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these players and both have won one apiece.

Rublev Breaks Losing Streak

Rublev was on a three-match losing streak coming into this tournament but more vitally he hadn’t won a single match in a hardcourt competition in this second half of the season.

This time around at the US Open, Rublev broke that run with a straight-set win over Arthur Cazaux and kept up his appointment with a place in the quarterfinal – his best Grand Slam performance, his best performance at the US Open and his showing last year at this tournament.

In a match lasting two hours and 33 minutes, Rublev completed a 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Cazaux, a lucky loser who had entered the tournament after Emil Ruusuvuori had been ruled out of it.

Rublev was a 3/20 favourite (with bet365) entering the match and lived up to those odds despite suffering from a small stumble while serving for the second set at 5-4. He would get broken but would then go on to win it in a tie-breaker before easing past Cazaux in the third set.

Things might not be as easy come the second round.

Monfils Quells Daniel Challenge

It wasn’t the prettiest of wins for Monfils but having won just one Grand Slam match since the Australian Open last year, he would have been relieved to come through.

A former semifinalist at the US Open, Monfils came back from a set down against Taro Daniel to seal his second round berth in a match lasting three hours and 13 minutes.

Monfils won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (4) to make it through, despite getting broken three times. At one set all, Daniel had a chance to put more pressure on Monfils when he broke his French opponent to take a 1-0 lead but Monfils then retaliated with three breaks in that set.

And in the fourth, again, Daniel was 2-0 up with an early break but saw that lead getting slashed in the fourth game.

Where Monfils will need to improve against a player like Rublev is his second serve which read a measely 36% in his opener. Compensating for that, however were the 68 winners that Monfils hit in the match, something that should embolden him to test out his Russian opponent here.

He is a 6/4 (with bet365) underdog here.

Rublev v Monfils Prediction and Tip

Rublev might have a struggle on his hands here and we could see a four or five-setter in this one.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 39.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
