Pavlyuchenkova Wins First Match in Outdoor Tournament This Year
With fitness concerns having made it difficult for Pavlyuchenkova to take to court, the former world number 11 had entered this tournament as a world number 98.
Having reached the fourth round of the US Open the last time she played in 2021, Pavlyuchenkova was drawn to play American qualifier and 729th-ranked Fiona Crawley in her opener. Still she was just a 3/10 favourite (with bet365) which was a testimony to how she had gone about her business this season in hardcourt tournaments.
Prior to coming into this match, she had lost all four of her matches on it and for Pavlyuchenkova to then clinch a 6-2, 6-4 win over Crawley would have been something to behold.
Things will get tougher against her Ukrainian opponent but Pavlyuchenkova will breathe slightly easier as she continues on her test to get back to full fitness and better ranking than her current one.
