Greet Minnen started her US Open campaign with a clinical 6-1, 6-1 rout of Venus Williams in the opener. While the Belgian was at the top of her game, she did benefit from Venus’s understandably slow play too.
Of course, that is not to say Minnen doesn’t deserve credit here. She has been absolutely remarkable in 2023. Her highlights include two Challenger finals – most recently coming in the Kozerki Open – and two ITF finals. She also won a couple of titles on the latter tour in Porto and the AK Ladies Open in Germany.
All in all, she has an impressive 49 wins this year against only 14 losses. This has also allowed her to make a massive leap in the rankings – all the way from 200s to now World No. 97.
Even on the doubles side of things, Minnen has done well with four titles in total.
Greet began her campaign at the Flushing Meadows as a qualifier – beating Zeynep Sonmez, Sinja Kraus, and Katrina Scott comfortably.

Vickery Upsets Vekic
Sachia Vickery, age 28, also started in New York as a qualifier – moving past Irene Burillo, Viktorija Golubic, and Yanina Wickmayer.
In the opener, she went up against the resurgent Croat Donna Vekic and defeated her 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, in two hours and 22 minutes. The American did a good job of keeping Vekic at bay – despite having an inferior service game with a 67% first-service win rate. Vickery struck 34 winners and committed 32 unforced errors – compared to Donna’s 48.
Sachia’s record is now 29-18, with most of her wins coming on the ITF circuit and qualifying matches. Her best result is a semifinal feat in ITF Boca Raton and round two in the Charleston Open.
Minnen v Vickery Prediction and Tip
Minnen starts as the favourite here, given the season she is enjoying. The Williams victory has given her a confidence boost, and she should do well to make quick work of Vickery too.
