This is the ninth time she has gone past the first round at the US Open and she will be looking to make an eighth third round appearance. In addition to finishing runner-up to Angelique Kerber in 2016, she finished as quarterfinalist in 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022.
Can the world no. 25 go deep this year as well. She has struggled with form for most parts of the season though. However, she did reach the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and in Dubai, so she can raise her game in big tournaments.

Burel beats Dolehide
Clara Burel is into the second round at the US Open for the second consecutive year.
The Frenchwoman, who lost in the third round last year, needed an hour and 25 minutes to dispatch American Caroline Dolehide 6-4, 6-3.
Both players struggled to hold their serves in the first set, with Dolehide winning just 1 of her five service games and Burel winning 2 of her 5.
The trend continued in the second set, with Dolehide winning just 1 of her 4 service games, while Burel fared better, winning 3 of 5 service games. As a result the 22-year-old world no. 62 won the contest 6-4, 6-3.
A finalist in Lausanne this year, Burel improved her season record to 28-14. Can she improve that further on Thursday?
