While Juan Pablo Varillas is more proficient on clay than any other surface one would have probably expected him to put up some sort of a fight against Fritz. As things went, none of that happened with Fritz dropping a mere five games in the encounter.
In a late evening match on Wednesday, Fritz needed only an hour and 41 minutes to register a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Varillas and move into the third round.
Fritz, who had dropped exactly the same number of games in the first round against Steve Johnson as well, broke Varillas six times. In the process he saved all the three break-points he faced, hitting 26 winners to his opponent’s nine.
This pushes Fritz’s hardcourt record to 32-8 for the season, his best by some distance, as he prepares to make it to the fourth round at this competition for the first time. Taking on a player who has never been ranked better than 187th in the world it’s no surprise that Fritz starts off a 1/12 favourite here with bet365.

Mensik Continues Stunning Run
Before coming into this tournament, the 17-year-old Mensik had never played in the main draw of an ATP tournament even. He entered into each of his first two qualifiers a 6/5 underdog with bet365 and won those best-of-three matches in three sets.
Mensik then overcame Zdenek Kolar in the third qualifier in straight sets before another shock win in the main draw of this tournament against Gregoire Barrere. It needed him four sets to come through and clinch his first ever main draw win but then to show it was no flash in the pan, Mensik has managed to continue his winning run.
It came against a fellow qualifier and 22-year-old Frenchman, Titouan Droguet, with Mensik overcoming a first set deficit to win it in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
What was fascinating to watch was Mensik’s serving capabilities which saw him clinch 85% of his first serve points and 62% 0f his second serves. Can he now push Fritz with the same as he starts out a distant 15/2 (with bet365) to shock his opponent?

While a Fritz win seems to be a lock we think it could take the American a bit of time to get through with a fourth set or three tough sets a solid possibility.
