Townsend Shocks Haddad Maia
The former world number 10 Haddad Maia had gone into her opening encounter against Sloane Stephens knowing it could push her to the brink and had come out a winner there. Against a player ranked 132nd in the world that Townsend is, Haddad Maia was an 11/20 favourite to win it.
Little did she expect the kind of rhythm that Townsend would get into with her serving making it very difficult for Haddad Maia to get past it.
And in the end, in a match lasting a tick over two hours, Townsend won 7-6 (1), 7-5 to reach the third round of the US Open for the first time since 2019.
Townsend lost just eight points on serve in the first set before cruising past Haddad Maia in the tie-breaker that followed. In the second, she took a 3-1 lead, dropped her serve in the sixth but came back to break her opponent in the 11th game again.
She would serve it out in the next game to reach round three where she is a distant 7/2 (with bet365) to surprise her opponent.
