The year keeps getting better for Zhizhen Zhang as the Chinese knocked out last year’s finalist and world no. 5 Casper Ruud on Wednesday to record his second top ten win of the season. As a result of the victory he has now moved into teh third round of the NY major for the first time in his career.
This year, he recorded his first Grand Slam wins in Roland Garros, where he made it to the round of 32. He has equalled his best at Flushing Meadows and has a very good chance of making a round of 16 debut.
His latest win was his biggest in terms of rankings, as his earlier top 10 success had come over the then-world no. 10 Taylor Fritz in Madrid, where he finished as a quarterfinalist.
Zhang, who had fought off J.J. Wolf in five sets in the first round at the US Open, needed close to three and a half hours to beat the Norwegian 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.
Zhang out-aced Ruud 18-7 and struck 60 winners during the contest, which was 21 more than his opponent. He had struck 15 aces and 52 winners agains Wolf in the first round.

Hijikata Races Past Fucsovics
Australia’s Rinky Hijikata continued his impress at the US Open with a stunning straight sets win over Marton Fucsovics in the second round on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old saved both the break points that he faced during the match and converted 7 of 11 to raced past the Hungarian 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 in under two hours.
Handed a wild card for the tournament, the world no. 110 was impressive in the first round as well, knocking out Pavel Kotov 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
The winner of the 2023 Australian Open doubles title, Hijikata has now bettered his previous best result at a major, achieved this year in Melbourne. It will be interesting to see if he can continue his astonishing run in the tournament and reach the round of 16.

Zhang holds the edge in this contest. He has been the superior player and also the more consistent of the two this season and to top it all, he will be a lot more confident after knocking out last year’s runner-up and the world no. 5.
