Borna Gojo scored a second straight sets win in a row as he powered past Mackenzie McDonald in the second round on Wednesday.
The Croatian qualifier, who had beaten Hugo Dellien 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round, needed two hours and 15 minutes to beat the American 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in round 2.
While he had not faced a single break point in the first round, he saved 1 of 3 and converted 5 of 17 against McDonald. He struck 13 aces in each of the first two rounds.
The straightforward victories on his US Open debut have taken him into the third round of a major for the first time in his career.
He had looked good in the qualifying rounds as well, defeating Hamad Medjedovic in three, and Adrian Andreev and Tomas Machac in straight sets. Gojo is now 7-5 at the tour level this year. Can he keep progressing in the tournament with a win on Friday?

Vesely Wins Marathon Against Cerundolo
For the second straight match, Jiri Vesely edged out an opponent in five sets to keep his chances alive at the US Open.
The world no. 437, who defeated France’s Enzo Couacaud 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, needed four hours and 10 minutes to see off Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.
The left-hander had built a two-sets-to-love lead but couldn’t close out the contest soon as the 20th seed came right back into the contest by taking the third and the fourth sets. the final set saw Vesely comeback from a break down twice before sealing the contest in the tiebreak.
The 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (10-6) victory saw Vesely hit 13 aces and 28 winners to Cerundolo’s 16 aces and 69 winners. He won the crucial moments of the match, particularly in the tiebreaks.
As a result the Czech is into the third round of the US Open for the second time. 2015 remains the only season in his last nine attempts when he reached this far at Flushing Meadows.
Gojo v Vesely Prediction and Tip
Gojo has played a lot more than Vesely this season and is currently on a five match winning streak. He has a better record on hard courts and is expected to reach the round of 16 on his US Open debut.
