Wawrinka Turns Back the Clock Against Etcheverry

It was vintage Stan Wawrinka at work as the 2016 US Open champion battled past Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry in a three-and-a-half-hour contest in the second round on Thursday.

In a hard-hitting engaging contest, Wawrinka saved 7 of 9 break points and converted 5 of 11 to beat the Argentine 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-2. As a result of the win, the 38-year-old Wawrinka became the oldest man to reach the US Open third round since Jimmy Connors made it to the semi-finalist in 1991 as a 39-year-old.

Making his 16th appearance at the New York major, Wawrinka had earlier beaten Yoshihito Nishioka 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 6-4 to win his opener.

The three-time major champion struck 12 aces in the first match and 16 in the second. While he was dominant in the first; in the second he showed he can still dig deep and win pressure matches.

He improved to 24-15 for the season. Can he improve that record further?

Sinner v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

While he looked extremely fit while knocking out the 30th seed in the second round, it will be interesting to see if Wawrinka’s body is up for another physically draining contest.

Sinner, of course, will be the favourite. He has dominated their recent matches, is in good form and is young and agile and will put the Swiss player’s fitness to test. But given the warrior that Wawrinka is, he is expected to put up some resistance, however, the Italian is expected to reach the fourth round.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sinner to win: 1/3 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 37.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
