Daniil Medvedev v Sebastian Baez Head to Head

Medvedev and Baez have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Medvedev Stretched by O’Connell

Things looked to be going his way for most part of the first three sets before Medvedev lost a bit of focus and in turn a set. It took him a fourth set to come through in his second round match against Christopher O’Connell as a result despite starting out a 1/33 favourite (with bet365).

Medvedev was 6-2, 6-2, 4-2 up against O’Connell when he lost his serve and in the tie-breaker that followed, he also missed two match-point opportunities. O’Connell took advantage of that and closed out the set off the very first chance he got before Medvedev came back to grab the match in the fourth.

The Russian got back to his clinical ways in the fourth set, breaking his opponent twice more to finish it off 6-2, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-2 to seal his third round berth.

He had earlier dropped just two games in his opening round rout of Attila Balazs and will now start off a huge favourite against clay-courter Baez, with bet365 offering 1/10 for his win.

Baez Makes it 12 Wins in a Row!

Having entered the US Open having never won a match before this, Baez looked to be well-prepared to end that record.

The clay-court specialist had won a title in Kitzbuhel but more vitally clinched his third title of the season just a week before the US Open by winning his first ATP tournament on a hardcourt surface. That came in Winston-Salem.

Which is why when he shocked Borna Coric in the first round after starting out a 17/10 underdog (with bet365), it was on the back of some excellent form.

And while he fell a set behind in his second round match against Felipe Meligeni, Baez came back to win the next two 6-4, 6-4 to take the lead. At this point, Meligeni was forced to retire from the contest, leaving Baez with a third round berth for the first time in a Grand Slam in his career.

Baez might not have a very good chance here against Medvedev but he sure won’t be a pushover having entered the match on the back of his 12 successive wins.

Medvedev v Baez Prediction and Tip

Medvedev can be expected to win this with Baez giving his opponent a bit of a fight. Not quite sure if we will see a fourth set but we could see at least one of the sets go long.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Medvedev to win AND Over 34.5 games: 6/5 (with bet365)
