After winning his first two rounds with ease, world no. 10 Frances Tiafoe faced his first real test at the US open in the third round on Friday, when he needed four sets to beat the 22nd seed Adrian Mannarino to keep moving ahead in the tournament.

Tiafoe, who was a semifinalist at Flushing Meadows in 2022, lost the opening set to the Frenchman after conceding the only break of the set. He, however, dominated the second with two breaks and then got teh solitary break in the third to take a two sets to one lead.

Mannarino put up a fight in the fourth as both players exchanged two break each, before Tiafoe edged a closely contested tiebreak to seal a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) victory.

The three-hour win saw Tiafoe serve 15 aces and hit 47 winners.

A winner of two titles this season, in Houston and Stuttgart, Tiafoe improved his season record to 36-14. He had won his first two rounds in straight sets against Learner Tien and Sebastian Ofner respectively.

For teh fourth consecutive year, he will be playing in the fourth round at the US Open. Besides his semifinal finish last year, he also reached an Australian Open quarterfinal in 2019. Can he reach his third Grand Slam quarterfinal with a win on Sunday?

Hijikata’s Dream Run Continues

Australian wild card Rinky Hijikata continued to impress at the US Open, reaching the fourth round with a four set win over China’s Zhizhen Zhang.

The world no. 110, who won the Australian Open doubles title this year with Jason Kubler, needed just over three hours to beat the Chinese player 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Hijikata struck 13 aces and 55 winners, saved 4 of 8 break points and capitalised on 7 of 19 breaking chances to move past the world no. 67.

Playing just his third Grand Slam tournament, Hijikata’s previous best was a second round finish in the opening major this year. However, he has made an astonishing run into the second week at Flushing Meadows.

He had begun his campaign with a four-set win over Pavel Kotov and then ousted Marton Fucsovics in straight sets.

Assured of breaking into the top 100 for the first time in his career, can he keep his dream run going?
