Paul Defeats Davidovich Fokina

After an outstanding comeback win in the second round against Roman Safiullin, world no. 14 Tommy Paul held off Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four sets on Friday to book a place in the second week of the US Open for the first time in his career.

The American, who made four first round exits before losing in the third round last year, needed four sets to edge past the Spaniard in the third round.

Paul struck 15 aces and 40 winners, saved 5 of 6 break points and converted 6 of 8 to oust the 21st seed 6-1, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.

Two days ago, Paul had survived a real scare in the second round, when he came back from two sets down to beat Safiullin 3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3. He had also needed four sets to win his opener against Stefano Travaglia, beating the Italian 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Paul is 35-19 at the tour level this year, which includes two runner-up finishes. He produced his best Grand Slam result at the Australian open reaching the semifinal before falling to Novak Djokovic.

Shelton Powers Past Karatsev

Ben Shelton is getting into a habit of impressing in Grand Slams. The 20-year-old American, who reached the Australian Open quarterfinal on his Melbourne debut this year, is one win from making it to the last eight in the final slam of the season.

In between the first and the last major, Shelton has had a few wins here are there but has lacked the consistency and not been able to go deep in tournaments.

Come the grand slams and the lefty knows how to raise his game. Shelton began his US Open campaign with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win over Pedro Cachin in the first round and then advanced to the third round after Dominic Thiem retired while trailing 6-7 (1-7), 0-1.

On Friday, the world no. 47 Shelton struck 26 aces and 38 winners to beat world no. 77 Aslan Karatsev 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the third round.

The two hour and 18 minute contest saw Shelton win 86% points on the back of his first delivery and convert 6 of 10 break points, while getting broken just once. Can he reach a second major quarterfinal in what has been a breakthrough season so far?

Paul v Shelton Prediction and Tip

Paul is the more experienced player and has been a lot more consistent than Shelton. He also won their only meeting at the Australian Open, so he will be the favourite to advance, but this match could well be decided in the final set.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Paul to win: 1/2 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 38.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
