Fritz Breezes Past Mensik

World no. 9 Taylor Fritz continued his dominance at the U.S. Open, demolishing a third straight opponent on Friday to book a place in the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in his eighth attempt.

The American has not been broken in the first three rounds, in fact he did not face a single break point in the third round clash against world no. 206 Jakub Menšík on Friday.

Fritz struck 10 aces, dropped just 13 points on his serve in the entire match and converted 7 of 9 break points to win the one hour and 27 minutes match 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.

Fritz had not faced a break point in the first match either, beating Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. He followed that up with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 drubbing of Juan Pablo Varillas in the third round.

Having reached the second week without breaking a sweat, Fritz will be full of confidence. He has reached the quarterfinals of a grand slam just once in his career and that was at Wimbledon last year. He has got a great chance of making it to the last eight of major again.

Gritty Stricker Wins Another Five-Setter

After causing a huge second round upset by knocking out Stefanos Tsitsipas in a four hour and 10 minutes contest, 21-year-old Dominic Stricker dug deep once again to edge past Benjamin Bonzi in a three-and-a-half-hour third round contest.

Stricker, who had never played at a Grand Slam before this season, struck 14 aces and 60 winners to beat Bonzi 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-2 and extend his current win streak to six matches, which began in the qualifying rounds of the US Open.

Stricker had struck 79 winners during the marathon against the world no. 7 in the second round, which he won 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.

He had also needed four sets to win his opener against Alexei Popyrin, beating the Aussie 1R 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

So it has been a gutsy run for the Swiss so far. Ranked no. 128, the left-hander improved his season record to 5-3 at the tour level. Can he cause another upset on Sunday?

Fritz v Stricker Prediction and Tip

They have reached the second week in contrasting fashions. Fritz has not been tested at all, while Stricker has had to dig deep in almost all of his matches since the first qualifying round, and he has shown great resolve and determination to keep progressing. Fritz will be wary of the Swiss, but eventually the American could end Stricker’s stunning run.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fritz to win: 1/3 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 39.5 games in the match: 4/5 (with bet365)
