Belinda Bencic v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings, all of which have come in hardcourt competitions and Cirstea leads 2-1. They had last faced off at the 2022 US Open where Bencic won in three.

Bencic Scrapes Past Zhu

As we had mentioned in our preview to Bencic’s third round match against Lin Zhu, there was every chance that the Swiss number one would face some resistance from her Chinese opponent.

And that’s exactly what happened with Bencic dropping a set and getting stretched to a tie-breaker in another one before finding her way through to a win.

Bencic was on court for two hours and 42 minutes and was broken four times on her way to a 7-6 (1), 2-6, 6-3 victory over Zhu. In the end, it came down to who handled the key points better in a match that saw Bencic win 60 points on serve to Zhu’s 59.

Zhu’s winners and unforced errors differential count was a minus 18, which was better than Bencic who was at minus 20 through the encounter and yet, it was Bencic who scraped through.

She will now start off an 8/15 favourite with bet365 but the manner in which Cirstea has played in this tournament and her record against Bencic, those seem to be rather short odds.

Cirstea Ends Rybakina’s Journey

Cirstea had eased her way into the third round with successive straight-set win but not too many would have given her any chance against the former Wimbledon winner and this year’s Australian Open finalist and the Indian Wells Open champion, Elena Rybakina.

Two hours and 49 minutes into their third contest, Cirstea had created shockwaves in the competition with a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4 win over the world number four. In doing so so, Cirstea had made it to the fourth round of the US Open for the first time since she first played here in 2007.

Having started out a whopping 5/2 (with bet365) underdog against Rybakina, Cirstea was 3-1 up in the first set before wrapping it up quickly. She broke Rybakina in the very first game of the second set as well but then dropped serve for the first time and Rybakina clawed back to level things out off her fifth set-point.

The final set was a topsy-turvy one with Cirstea going up a break on three occasions, only to lose her serve again. At 4-5, however, Rybakina failed to hold on to her serve and in turn giving Cirstea a way to the fourth round.

Cirstea will sure hope to do better than the 6/4 (bet365) odds on offer for her win here.
