Pegula Passes Svitolina Test

Jessica Pegula edged past Elina Svitolina in a three-set third round contest on Saturday to book a place in the second week of the US Open for the second time in what is her seventh appearance.

Ranked no. 3 in the world, the 29-year-old saved 2 of 3 break points and converted 3 of 8 to beat the Ukrainian 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in close to two hours.

Pegula is now a win away from matching her previous best, which was a quarterfinal finish last year. The American had a relatively easy first two rounds, beating Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and Patricia Maria Țig 6-3, 6-1 in the second.

With the three wins, Pegula is now 46-14 for the season and 11-2 since the start of August, which included a run to the title in Cincinnati.

Also a finalist in Qatar this year, Pegula is aiming to reach her seventh gRAND slam quarterfinal and a third this year, having made the last eight in Melbourne and Wimbledon.

Keys Rallies Past Samsonova

2017 finalist Madison Keys rallied past Liudmila Samsonova in the third round on Saturday to reach the round of 16 for the sixth time at the US Open.

Keys conceded the only break of the match in the 11th game of the first set, which allowed the 15th seed Samsonova to take a one-set-to-love lead. However, the American made a strong comeback and dominated the rest of the match, breaking the Russian twice each in the next two sets and claiming a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

It was by far the toughest contest so far for Keys in the tournament, having started with straight set wins over Arantxa Rus and Yanina Wickmayer in the first two rounds respectively.

Keys had not been broken in the first two rounds. So overall it has been a strong campaign so far from the 28-year-old world no. 17.

She will be hoping to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the 10th time in her career on Monday. She has been in great form throughout the year, with her best coming on grass, where she won the title in Eastbourne and finished as a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon.

Can she upset the third seed.

Pegula v Keys Prediction and Tip

It is expected to be a closely contested match between the two Americans. Keys has more experience of going deep in Grand Slam tournaments, while Pegula has been the better player throughout 2023 and has had 30 wins on hard courts this year compared to Keys’ 17.
