Cori Gauff v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one. Gauff defeated Ostapenko in Linz in 2019 before they met again at the Australian Open earlier this year in which Ostapenko knocked her American opponent out in the fourth round.

Gauff Taken to Three Sets by Wozniacki

Caroline Wozniacki has done well on her return to competitive tennis but there was always going to be a question-mark around her chances against the in-form Gauff. Especially given that Gauff hadn’t played so many matches in a row in a while.

Gauff looked to have taken advantage of that, clinching her fourth round match 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to reach the last eight in two hours and two minutes.

At one stage, it did look like Gauff was getting frustrated by her lack of rhythm even as she shushed her own coaching box but she came back well in the final set to break Woznkiacki three times after losing her own serve in the first game.

While Gauff has looked like a champion material for the first time in her career, she has also shown a few traces of losing momentum in the middle of matches at times. This happened against Elise Mertens in the previous encounter too, and that’s where Ostapenko could take advantage with her power hitting.

Gauff is a favourite though starting out 2/5 (with bet365) to win this.

Ostapenko Knocks Out Swiatek Again

Iga Swiatek had been in solid form coming into her fourth round match and as a defending champion, was a huge favourite against Ostapenko. She had lost every single of her previous three meetings against Ostapenko but if there was one player who could change things around there it was the world number one.

Ostapenko did not have a bad opening set, other than the seventh game in which Swiatek served to go 5-2 up but the world number one looked like the better player.

Down one set to love, Ostapenko then grabbed a 2-0 lead, only to lose her serve in the seventh game as Swiatek looked like she was settling back into contest. From that point onward, Ostapenko went on a rampage, as she won eight of the following nine games and dropped her serve a whopping five times in that period.

While it was shocking enough to see the world number one lose her serve in that manner, full marks to Ostapenko for having been able to come back to clinch a place in the quarterfinals 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

She will know she has the game and the chance to test out her quarterfinal opponent despite starting out a 2/1 (with bet365) underdog here.

Gauff v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip

Gauff will have a good chance to make the semifinals here but don’t think Ostapenko is going away without a fight.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ostapenko to win a set – Yes: 4/6 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
