Rinky Hijikata had done well to make it to the fourth round but against a rampaging Tiafoe, the world number 10, the 110th-ranked player from Australia fell woefully short.
In a match lasting a touch over two hours, Tiafoe grabbed a 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Hijikata and made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open for the second year running. Last season, Tiafoe was a semifinalist where he lost to the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Tiafoe faced no break-points in the first two sets of the encounter and it was only in the third that he was broken twice as a part of a five-game series in which neither player could hold serve. It was the fifth of those games where Tiafoe broke Hijikata for the seventh time in the match to grab the win.
This follows victories over Learner Tien, Sebastian Ofner and Adrian Mannarino in the first three rounds of the tournament for Tiafoe. Can he now wear down the hard-serving Shelton. bet365 seems to think so as he starts off a 2/5 favourite here.

Shelton Shocks Paul
Shelton and Tommy Paul had last faced off in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open earlier this season and in that match it was Paul who had edged his opponent out in a tough, four-setter.
This time around, at the US Open, the match lasted four sets again but the result was reversed as Shelton scored a win and made it to the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam for the second time in his career – and the year.
The world number 47, who had struggled to get going since that quarterfinal appearance against Paul, relied heavily on his serving to grab a 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Paul. The match lasted two hours and 51 minutes and saw Shelton get the better of Paul’s serve six times in the encounter.
Earlier in the tournament, Shelton had also swamped past Pedro Cachin, overcome a struggling Dominic Thiem and eased past Aslan Karatsev.
Shelton might not start a favourite here with bet365 offering 2/1 for his win, he will look to make things very difficult for Tiafoe as he hunts for a place in the semifinal against the Djokovic v Fritz winner.
