Novak Djokovic v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

There have been seven previous meetings between these two players and Djokovic has won every single time. It’s 4-0 in hardcourt competitions, of which two were in outdoor hardcourt tournaments.

The last time they faced off was in Cincinnati last month and Djokovic dropped just four games in his win.

Djokovic Eases Past Gojo

Borna Gojo is ranked 105th in the world and against him, Djokovic was always going to be a favourite to win in straight sets. And that’s exactly how it panned out but not before the world number two was stretched a bit in two of those sets.

Coming on tHhe back of a comeback from behind win over Laslo Djere in the third round, Djokovic was 2-0 up in the first set with an early break and would break again to take a 5-1 lead. He wrapped things up by serving out to love after that.

Gojo broke early in the second set only to lose his serve in the very next game and then again in the 11th game. Djokovic went two sets to love by serving it out to 15 in the next game.

The third set went to serve till the sixth game in the third set before Djokovic edged forward with a break in the seventh. He had a match-point on Gojo’s serve in the ninth game before winning it on his own in the 10th.

He now faces an opponent who has never gotten past Djokovic and the world number two starts off 1/7 favourite here (with bet365).

Fritz Makes it Four Successive Straight-Set Wins

In what was his fourth straight three-set win, Fritz overcame surprise opponent Dominic Stricker to make it to the last eight stage of the US Open for the first time in his career.

In fact, Fritz had come into his fourth round match against Stricker as a first-timer at this stage of a competition and he did encounter a few difficulties earlier on despite starting off a 1/8 (with bet365) favourite.

Unable to break Stricker for a bit, even when Fritz did manage that to go 5-3 up, he was broken right back. He then saved two break-points at 5-5 before edging past Stricker in the following tie-breaker.

The second set was slightly easier as Fritz took a 4-2 lead with a break of serve and soon served it out to grab a two-set lead. And a late break of serve in the third set sealed the deal for Fritz.

What’s interesting to see was there wasn’t too much of a difference in the serving stats – Fritz won 83% of his first serve points and 55% of the second serves as compared to 82% and 44% respectively for Stricker. Fritz played the big points better as his break in the ninth game of the third set indicates.

He now has a huge challenge on his hands against a player who will begin next week as a number one again. No surprises then that Fritz is a distant 9/2 (with bet365) to win this.

Djokovic v Fritz Prediction and Tip

Djokovic did have a bit of a scare against Djere but his form otherwise has been impeccable and it’s tough to see him go down in a best-of-five match against a player whom he has beaten seven times in the past. He can be expected to ease past Fritz and set up a meeting against the Frances Tiafoe v Ben Shelton match winner.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Games Handicap Fritz +6.5: 4/6 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 11/10 (with bet365)
