Daniil Medvedev v Andrey Rublev Head to Head

There have been seven previous meetings between these two Russian friends and Medvedev leads 5-2 on head to head. All of their matches came on hardcourt surfaces and the last time they faced off was in Dubai earlier this year when Medvedev won the final 6-2, 6-2.

Medvedev Makes a Comeback Win over De Minaur

Alex de Minaur had entered the US Open on the back of some excellent form but coming up against the world number three, Medvedev, he was still a 9/4 underdog (with bet365) to make it to the quarterfinals.

Which is why when he broke Medvedev twice in a row at 2-2 in the opening set and claimed it 6-2, it looked like the Russian was in deep trouble.

Medvedev, however, is made of sterner stuff. Sure, he hasn’t looked at his best in recent times but over the following three sets, he definitely looked better than his Aussie opponent.

So much so that he faced only three more break-points in the encounter and didn’t lose his serve even once while breaking de Minaur five times in the process. In the end, a two hours and 42 minutes long encounter ended 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 in his favour to seal his quarterfinal berth.

The former US Open winner didn’t have much of a competition going up against him in the previous three rounds either but now faces a difficult test in the form of a fellow Russian. Despite starting out  2/5 favourite here (with bet365), Medvedev will know things might not go that easy for him.

Rublev Thwarts Draper

While Rublev had gone into his fourth round match as a 2/5 favourite with bet365 against Britain’s Jack Draper, there were a few question-marks around his form given his results in recent times.

Rublev, who had a win-loss record of 1-3 over the four matches before the start of the US Open 2023, was then taken to four sets by Gael Monfils and Arthur Rinderknech in his previous two rounds as well.

Which is why when he grabbed the first set with a break of serve and then had four chances to break Draper in the second, the writing looked to be on the wall for his opponent.

Draper put up a decent fight though, saving all of those break-points – and two more after that – and then getting past Rublev’s serve in the sixth game to level the proceedings. And he went on to take a 2-0 lead at the start of the third.

That would have put some pressure on Rublev but he is an experienced campaigner and slowly but surely, the Russian clawed back, winning back the break in the fourth game and then adding another in the eighth.

With the momentum shifting he added another break of serve in the fifth game of the fourth set before winning it off fourth match-point he got.

Things will be a lot tougher against a player of Medvedev’s calibre but Rublev will know Medvedev isn’t unbeatable despite the 7/4 (bet365) odds.

Medvedev v Rublev Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be a keen tussle between two players who haven’t been at their best but have deserved their places in the quarterfinals. Medvedev looks good to make the last four but Rublev can be expected to disrupt some momentum in the middle of the encounter and that could see a fourth or the fifth set in the offing as a result.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Medvedev to win: 4/9 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 39.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
