Djokovic Dumps Out Fritz
Novak Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer’s record of 46 Grand Slam semifinals as the 23-time Grand Slam champion knocked out ninth seed and local favourite Taylor Fritz in straight sets in the quarterfinals on Tuesday to book a place in a 47th major semifinal.
In the process the world no. 2 improved his quarterfinal record at the US Open to 13-0. Djokovic is a three-time former champion and has six runner-up finishes in the tournament.
The 36-year-old saved 10 of 12 break points and converted 6 of 9 to beat the world no. 9, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday.
With the win Djokovic improved to 43-5 in 2023. He is 23-1 from his last 24 matches and is currently on a 10-match winning streak. The only one match he lost in that phase was the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz. He won the French Open before Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open after the grass court major.
If he wins the semifinal, it would be the third time in his career, when the Serb would have reached the final of all four majors in a calendar year. Djokovic won the Australian Open and the French Open this year and finished runner-up in Wimbledon.
Djokovic is chasing a 36th Grand Slam final and is looking really good in the tournament.
He began with straight sets thrashing of Alexandre Müller and Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first two rounds respectively. Laslo Djere pushed him to the hilt by taking the first two sets in the third round, but Djokovic recovered well to see of his compatriot in five sets. He then saw off Borna Gojo in straight sets in the fourth round.
He is expected to roll past the upcoming star in the semifinal.

Shelton Holds Off Tiafoe
World no. 47 Ben Shelton became the youngest US Open men’s singles semifinalist since Michael Chang in 1992 as the 20-year-old American defeated compatriot Frances Tiafoe in four sets on Tuesday.
Shelton, who had made it to the Australian Open quarterfinals earlier this year, struck 14 aces and 50 winners to beat the 10th seed 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 in three hours and nine minutes.
Shelton saved 2 of 6 break points and converted 7 of 15 to reach his first major semifinal in what has been a remarkable year for him. The lefty improved his season record to 17-20 with the win.
It was his fourth four-set win of the tournament. The only one that finished earlier was the second round match against Dominic Thiem, as the Austrian retired while trailing 7-6 (7-1), 1-0.
In the other matches, Shelton beat Pedro Cachin 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round; Aslan Karatsev 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the third round; 14th seed Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the fourth round.
It would be a remarkable achievement if Shelton could keep his winning momentum going in the semifinal against the legend.
Djokovic v Shelton Prediction and Tip
Djokovic is the master of this trade, while Shelton is just starting off. The former is in red hot form and is seeking a 36th Grand Slam final, the latter is just into his fifth Grand Slam tournament and is seeking a maiden final. The 20-year-old has been extremely impressive in the two hard court majors this year and with crowd rooting for him he will look to give his best in his first major semifinal.
But Djokovic has been here way too many times and will be a heavy favourite to reach the final.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Djokovic to win: 1/20 (with bet365)
- Moderate Risk Tip: Under 36.5 games in the match: 4/9 (with bet365)
