Doi Receives a Wild Card

Misaki Doi has been handed a wild card for the tournament as a result the Japanese will be making her first main draw appearance in a tour level event.

Once a top 30 player in the world, Doi last played in the Ricany ITF in June, in which she finished as a runner-up.

Overall, Doi is 13-8 this season, having played 19 of those matches in ITF tournaments. The other two were at the Australian Open qualifier, in which she lost in the second qualifying round.

The left-handed Japanese, who has featured in three WTA finals in her career, was a Japan Open finalist in 2019, going down to Nao Hibino in the final.

Doi hasn’t played a lot at the top level recently and may find the going tough in the opener.

Hartono Beats Papamichail to Qualify

Compared to Doi, Arianne Hartono has played a lot of tennis this season and a 48-28 record is a testament to that. However, all but one of those matches have been played in lower level tournaments.

That one match was in the first round of the Australian Open, which Hartono lost in straight sets.

The Dutchwoman has featured in two ITF finals this year, winning her third ITF title in Setubal, Portugal.

She qualified for the Japan Open with a straight sets win over Greece’s Despina Papamichail in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

Hartono saved 4 of 6 break points and converted 6 of 10 to beat the world no. 191, 6-1, 7-5.

Hartono had earlier beaten Sofya Lansere 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the first qualifying round. Can she take down Doi in the first round?

Doi v Hartono Prediction and Tip

Hartono has played more than Doi this year and she has a far better record than Doi on hard courts this year. While Doi is 1-1 on hard court, the Dutchwoman is 40-22 on the surface. So it will be Hartono who will hold the edge in this contest.
