Ashlyn Krueger v Jessika Ponchet Head to Head

Krueger and Ponchet will be facing off in a competitive match for the first time.

Krueger Blasts Past Baindl

Kateryna Baindl might have come into her opening round encounter as a second favourite but at 1/1 (bet365) she wasn’t quite far behind Krueger in their opener.

Krueger, however, had other ideas as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Baindl in a match that lasted less than an hour and a half to seal her second round berth. Two late breaks in the first set were enough to help her take the lead and while she dropped her serve once in the second set it wasn’t enough for Baindl to stop her from clinching it in two.

This was Krueger’s first main draw win since reaching the quarterfinal of the Rosmalen Open, three months ago.

That performance in Rosmalen was also the only time this season that Krueger had won successive matches on the WTA circuit. Can she repeat that achievement as she takes on a player who has never been ranked better than 119th in the world before this.

Ponchet Reverses Losing Streak

Ponchet hasn’t featured in a lot of high level tournaments, having preferred to take part on the ITF circuit instead.

She had made the final of one of such tournaments in Spain in July but since getting there Ponchet had been struggling to string together any wins. Ponchet lost that match and then fell in the first round of the Warsaw Open.

The Frenchwoman failed to make it past the qualifiers at the US Open, losing to Dalma Galfi before a straight-set defeat in the first round of the Tokyo ITF competition to Yuki Naito despite going in as a 1/3 favourite with bet365.

What that meant was she brought a four-match losing streak to the Osaka Open and as a result of that was a 5/2 underdog coming into her opener against Viktorija Golubic.

That Ponchet won and won in straight sets would have been as much surprise as it’s a relief for her.

Now that she takes on Krueger in the second round, Ponchet will give herself a chance of making it two in two.

Krueger v Ponchet Prediction and Tip
