World no. 35 Lin Zhu of China made a solid start to the Japan Open, beating compatriot Xiyu Wang in straight sets in the first round on Tuesday.

Zhu was not broken in the match as she saved all the three break points that she faced. In contrast, she held four break points in the match and she broke her opponent once in each set to win the contest 6-4, 6-4.

Zhu, who won her maiden WTA title in Hua Hin this year, improved her season record to 24-18 across levels. She is 20-13 on hard courts.

Seeded no. 1 in the tournament, Zhu has been in pretty good form throughout the year, reaching three tour level semifinals in addition to the triumph in Hua Hin.

Most recently, she was a semifinalist in Cleveland and then reached the third round of the US Open for the first time in her career. She is 6-2 from her last eight matches and will be looking to keep that improve that further as she eyes a sixth WTA quarterfinal spot in 2023.

Uchijama Eases Past Raina

Japanese wild card Moyuka Uchijima made a brisk start as she eased past Indian qualifier Ankita Raina in straight sets on Tuesday.

Uchijima served seven aces and dropped just seven points on her serve in the entire match, winning 84% (36 of 43) service points. While she did not face a single break point, she converted 3 of 4 to win the one hour and 21 minute contest 6-4, 6-2.

The 22-year-old, who reached the semifinals of WTA 125 in Stanford last month, improved her season record to 24-26 across levels. She also played an ITF final earlier this year, but could not add to her previous seven titles.

Having got off to a quick start, Uchijima will hope to cause an upset on Thursday but will have her task cut out against the top seed.

Zhu is the superior player in this contest and is expected to ease into the quarterfinals.
