Sofia Kenin v Katie Volynets Head to Head
Kenin and Volynets have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Kenin Sends Kudermetova Packing
Veronika Kudermetova is a top-20 player and till very recently was aiming to break into the top-10. Then an injury concern forced her to pull out of the Berlin Open and since then her form has gone kaput.
Not that any of this really matters to Kenin, who came out with a game-plan and made things difficult for her opponent from the get go.
Kenin saved an early break-point but when she got her first opportunity, she overcame Kudermetova’s serve to go 4-3 up. Soon after she was serving it out to grab the set.
In the second, Kudermetova showed some fight and soon she was 4-2 up as well before Kenin quashed the challenge away with back to back breaks of serves to win it 6-4, 6-4.
This follows Kenin’s underwhelming record this year for a player who was once ranked fourth in the world, following a Grand Slam win. She did find some of her verve at Wimbledon where she was forced to go through the qualifiers before making the third round but followed that up with just a US Open appearance where she lost in the second.
Can she now make it two in two as she starts out a 1/2 favourite with bet365 here?

Volynets Edges Past Ngounoue
Clervie Ngounoue is just 17 years of age but already in the qualifiers she had scalped a couple of decent quality players to make the main draw. She had overcome Storm Hunter in a fighting two-setter before crushing Claire Liu in the second to seal her place in the main draw.
And while she was 7/5 (with bet365) to overcome Volynets, she put up a brave front in her opener.
Volynets, ranked more than 350 places ahead of her opponent, was forced to come back from being a set down to wrap up a three-set win.
She was on court for over two hours in her 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win which saw her drop her serve five times but managed to get past Ngounoue’s serve on six occasions. This included a late break in the 10th game of the second set that helped her clinch the set.
Can she now put up a show against the higher-ranked and her pedigreed opponent?
