Maria Sakkari v Emma Navarro Head to Head

Sakkari and Navarro have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Sakkari Benefits from Osorio’s Withdrawal

Seeded third in the tournament, Sakkari made it to the last eight with the benefit from Camila Osorio’s retirement. Sakkari led 6-3, 2-2 when a right thigh injury ended the match.

Sakkari had entered the encounter on the back of a lot of question-marks around her own form having lost in the first round at the US Open and wondered aloud if she should take a break from competitive tennis.

And that reflected in her tennis as well as Sakkari failed to find a way past Osorio’s serve, getting just one break-point on it in the first six games of the encounter. Sakkari saved a break-point in the seventh game and finally got the better of Osorio’s serve in the eighth.

Soon after she had wrapped up the opening set, Osorio took a medical timeout and one game after that, retired from the encounter.

Sakkari will be relieved to win a match and will now hope she can make it two in two for the first time since the Washington Open in the first week of August. She starts off a 1/2 favourite with bet365 here.

Navarro Makes It Her Best-Ever Showing in Hardcourt Competitions

Navarro has had a decent season on clay in 2023 but what she managed to do here at the San Diego Open is the first ever of her career.

Having qualified for the event by winning back to back matches before the start of the tournament, Navarro has now won successive matches in the main draw of the event. This marks her first ever time she has done that in a hardcourt competition at the highest level.

She started off with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Jasmine Paolini before carving out a 7-5, 6-4 win against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second. Sasnovich herself was on a high with a shock win over Belinda Bencic but a gritty Navarro ensured there were no repeats of that performance from her.

In a match lasting an hour and 40 minutes, Navarro earned six break-points and broke her opponent every single time to claim her place in the quarterfinal. In fact in both the sets, she was a break down only for her to come back and grab the win.

Navarro starts off 8/5 underdog with bet365 to win this though.

Sakkari v Navarro Prediction and Tip

Sakkari’s form makes her vulnerable to upsets and that’s why at 1/2 it’s tough to back her. Not much value there. Navarro could carve out a set here too.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Navarro to win a set – Yes: 1/2 (with bet365)
