In an encounter that lasted two hours and 19 minutes, the top-seeded Zhu was broken five times but still managed to keep afloat and grabbed the win 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
This was helped in no small way by Uchijima’s serving issues with Zhu winning 67% of her opponent’s second serve points in the encounter.
An interesting perspective to Zhu’s quick improvement can be seen from the fact that only last year, she was ranked 125th in the world, improving to 76th around the time she defeated Mandlik in an ITF-level encounter.
Fast forward it to 2023 and Zhu has already broken into the top 40 and a strong performance in this could help her jump into the top 30 as well. She starts off a 3/10 favourite in this match (with bet365) to get one step closer to that.

Mandlik Scores a Win Over Marino
Mandlik had qualified for this tournament by winning a couple of rounds in the qualifiers and then made it to the second round with a straight-set win over Diana Parry.
Coming into her second round meeting with Rebecca Marino, bet365 did not have either of them starting out as a favourite which was an indication of a possible three-setter.
