Barbora Krejcikova v Sofia Kenin Head to Head

Krejcikova won their only matchup in Rome in 2021.

Krejcikova Rallies Past Collins

World no. 13 Barbora Krejcikova came back from a set down to knock out the world no. 43 Danielle Collins in the semifinal of the San Diego Open on Friday.

Both players held seven break points in the match. While the Czech saved three of them, Collins could save just one as Krejcikova battled to a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win in two hours and 20 minutes.

The fourth seed is now a win away from a seventh WTA title and a second of this season. Earlier Krejcikova had won her maiden WTA 1000 title in Dubai. She had also reached the final in Birmingham, but could not lift the title.

Krejcikova had come to San Diego having not won a match in more than two months. But she ended her four-match losing streak with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Anhelina Kalinina in the round of 16. The 2021 French Open champion then ousted Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinal.

The tough win over Collins would have further boosted her confidence ahead of her 11th WTA final.

Resurgent Kenin Reaches First Final Since Oct. 2020

American wild card Sofia Kenin edged past a stubborn Emma Navarro in the semifinal on Friday to reach her first final since her runner-up finish at Roland Garros in October 2020.

Kenin, who saw her rankings fall out of the 200 last year due to injuries and long layoffs, is slowly regaining the form that saw her reach two Grand Slam finals in 2020 and climb to career high ranking of no. 4.

Currently ranked no. 93rd in the world, Kenin faced some stiff resistance from the qualifier after she had taken the first set with ease. A determined Navarro forced the deciding set, but eventually went down 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in a two hour and 20 minute contest.

Kenin was broken five times in the match, saving just one of the break points that she faced. In contrast she held 17 break points in the match and she capitalised on seven of those chances.

The 24-year-old, who is 22-16 across levels this year, will be playing in her eighth WTA final on Saturday. She has a 5-2 record in finals and has a great chance of ending a three year title drought in San Diego.

The 2020 Australian Open champion’s road to the final includes a straight sets win over sixth seed Veronika Kudermetova in the first round; a three-set comeback win over Katie Volynets in the second round; a straight sets drubbing of Anastasia Potapova in the quarterfinal and another three-set win over Navarro on Friday. Can she keep the rhythm going in the final?

Krejcikova v Kenin Prediction and Tip

This could go down the wire. Both players have displayed great courage and form throughout the tournament. There will be some pressure on Kenin having not won a final in a while. Krejcikova meanwhile has already played two finals this year. She is slightly better equipped to handle the pressure of a big game. But it’s a new day and Kenin will come out firing on all cylinders. Expect a three-setter with Krejcikova edging past the American to lift the title.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Krejcikova to win: 4/5 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 24.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
