Elise Mertens v Yanina Wickmayer Head to Head

Surprisingly, Belgians Mertens and Wickmayer have never faced off before this.

Mertens 3-6 In Recent Times

Since reaching the second round at Wimbledon, Mertens has struggled to get going and won just three of her nine matches she’s played. This includes back to back defeats to Daria Kasatkina at Washington and Montreal and a loss at the hands of Marie Bouzkova at Cincinnati.

It was only at the US Open that Mertens finally showed some signs of regaining some of her rhythm as she overcame Mirjam Bjorklund and Danielle Collins in difficult encounters to make the third round. It took the eventual tournament winner Cori Gauff to take Mertens down.

Any hopes, however, of a turnaround in fortunes were quashed when Mertens lost her opener at the San Diego Open, losing 6-1, 6-3 to Sloane Stephens.

She will now face a player who has been more focussed on the ITF circuit but the odd time she has been able to play at the highest level, has been steady. Can Mertens live up to her 1/3 (at bet365) winning odds?

Wickmayer at Season High Ranking

For a player who kick-started the year ranked 323rd in the world, it’s a wonder she has been able to make a direct entry into a WTA 1000 tournament. And that has been thanks to her performances on the ITF circuit where she has won three titles already this season.

As a result of that, her ranking has steadily climbed up the ladder and Wickmayer has been able to feature in the WTA 125 tournaments and beyond.

Like was the case in Gaiba where she made the quarterfinal in June and then came up with her best performance of the season at the Warsaw Open where she reached the semifinal.

An injury in the second round of the Prague Open ended her chances of playing in the WTA 1000 tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati but she came back to make the second round at the US Open as well.

Can she now convert that form into overcoming her more fancied opponent and fellow countrywoman here? Wickmayer starts 5/2 (with bet365) underdog here.

Mertens v Wickmayer Prediction and Tip

Mertens might not have it easy and could be stretched to three sets in this one against an in-form Wickmayer.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Wickmayer to win a set – Yes: 1/1 (with bet365)
