Arantxa Rus v Aliaksandra Sasnovich Head to Head

They have played each other once before, and that was in 2020, when they were playing in the Federation Cup, Rus for the Netherlands, and Sasnovich for Belarus. Sasnovich won in three sets.

Hamburg Winner Rus

Rus can look back on 2023 with a degree of satisfaction.

She won her maiden WTA tour title in Hamburg, and, on the back of that and other results, she reached a career high ranking.

Where the Dutch number one would like to see an improvement is when it comes to the big events – she failed to qualify in both Melbourne and Wimbledon, and did not get beyond the first round stage in both the French and US Opens.

And only in Madrid did she get beyond the first round of a WTA 1000 tournament either.

She will be hoping to find her Hamburg form again and forget the disappointment of her last match, her first round US Open defeat to Maddison Keys, easily beaten in straight sets.

A Difficult 12 Months for Sasnovich

By contrast, Sasnovich has endured a difficult 12 months. A top 30 player this time last year, she has now dropped out of the top 100, having failed to defend some of the points she won last year when she reached, and lost, two finals.

Despite that, she can point to a better general performance than Rus in major tournaments, having reached the second round in three out of the four majors, and in five successive WTA 1000 events.

Although, she too, was beaten in the first round of the US Open – in her case by the Pole Magda Linette – she has competed since, and that was in San Diego last week.

There she came through qualifying and took the scalp of Belinda Bencic, the world number 15, in their first round match.

The American Emma Navarro stopped her in her tracks, though, with a straight sets defeat.

Rus v Sasnovich Prediction and Tip

Whilst Rus is the higher ranked player, the difference in their rankings is largely illusory and Sasnovich should be higher than she currently stands.

And she did win their previous encounter, although both were playing for their countries at the time.

The surface may just push the advantage the way of Sasnovich, given that the win that Rus enjoyed in Hamburg was on clay.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sasnovich to win: 6/7 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 5/4 (with bet365)
