Fernandez on a Three-Match Losing Streal

2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez brings dodgy form into the tournament. The 21-year-old Canadian has lost her past three matches and will be eager to quickly return to winning ways.

The series of defeats began in the quarterfinals in Cleveland, where she fell to Tatjana Maria. That defeat was followed by back-to-back first round losses at the US Open (to Ekaterina Alexandrova) and the San Diego Open (to Beatriz Haddad Maia). Fernandez will take heart from the fact that the last two defeats came in very close three-set matches. So she is playing well, but just hasn’t been able to put the finishing touches.

That’s been the cases throughout the year for the lefty. She has looked good at times, but hasn’t been able to go deep in tournaments. As a result Fernandez has just two quarterfinal finishes in 2023. The first was in Auckland in January and the second in Cleveland in August.

She has also seen a drop in the rankings from no. 32 in February to a current ranking of no. 74.

She has an opportunity to get into a rhythm in Guadalajara as she opens against a qualifier. Can she make a strong start?

Muhammad Battles Past Lepchenko

Asia Muhammad edged out Varvara Lepchenko in the second qualifying round on Saturday to make it to the main draw of the tournament.

Broken thrice in the match by Lepchenko, Muhammad held as many as 22 break points in the match. She could convert just 5 of them, but that was enough for her to score a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 victory in two and a half hours.

Muhammad had also needed two and a half hours to win her first qualifying round match, beating Victoria Rodríguez 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

With the two wins, the world no. 351 improved her season record to 16-13 across levels. She won an ITF title on hard court at the Roehampton ITF. This will be her first tour level main draw appearance of the season.

Fernandez v Muhammad Prediction and Tip

Fernandez is a quality player and has been consistently playing in tour level tournaments against strong opponents, while Muhammad has mostly played in lower level tournaments against opponents who are ranked way below 100. So Fernandez is the superior player in this contest and is expected to sail through.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fernandez to win: 1/4 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
