Stephens Ousts Li

Last year’s quarterfinalist Sloane Stephens of the US defeated compatriot Ann Li in straight sets to get her campaign off to a fine start.

Ranked no. 38 in the world, Stephens was broken early in the first set, but she overturned a 0-3 deficit by break her opponent twice and taking a one-set-to-love lead.

In the second set, Stephens made a solid start, going two breaks up and building a 4-1 lead. Li did pull a break back but Stephens protected the other beat the world no. 164, 7-5, 6-4.

Stephens has improved to 25-19 across levels in 2023. She has been in decent form recently but has not been able to reach a lot of quarterfinals.

In the last six tournaments, that is since the start of the North American swing, Stephens has reached just one quarterfinal and that was in Cleveland, while she fell in the round of 16 in Montreal, Cincinnati and San Diego.

But she has made a promising start in Guadalajara and will look to continue that form in the second round against the Colombian on Tuesday.

Arango Stuns Potapova

World no. 180 Emiliana Arango of Colombia stunned 11th seed Anastasia Potapova of Russia in the first round on Monday.

Arango, who finished runner-up in the ITF Mosquera tournament on clay this year, needed an hour and 47 minutes to beat the world no. 26, 6-4, 6-3.

Arango saved 6 of 8 break points in the match. In contrast, she had 17 opportunities to break the Russian’s serve and she capitalised on 5 of those chances.

The 22-year-old is now 43-23 across levels this year. But she has played bulk of those matches on clay. On hard courts, she improved to 7-6 record this year. Can she upset another top 40 player on Tuesday?
