Leylah Fernandez v Emma Navarro Head to Head

Their only main draw match at the highest level came at the 2023 Indian Wells Open where Fernandez had won in straight sets. Earlier this year they had also faced off in a qualifier in Cincinnati and Navarro had edged past Fernandez.

Fernandez Sends Mertens Packing

There wasn’t much to choose between Fernandez and her second round opponent in Elise Mertens with the Canadian having started out a slight underdog at 1/1 (with bet365). In the end, Fernandez overcame those odds and her opponent easily and sealed off her place in the third round.

In doing so, Fernandez continued to show improvement in recent times from having plunged to 96th in the world in mid-July.

In reaching the third round at the Washington Open and Cleveland Open and now again in Guadalajara, Fernandez looks like she has done enough to climb back up to 65th in the world. Another win here will get her close to the top 50 with the former US Open runner-up and world number 13 having shown she has the game to get there.

Fernandez, who had dropped a mere four games in her first round rout of Asia Muhammad, shrugged off the Mertens challenge 6-3, 6-4 to make the third. Can she now quell Navarro’s run as she begins a 4/5 favourite here (bet365).

Navarro Shocks Keys

Madison Keys was fresh from a US Open semifinal appearance but then Navarro hadn’t done too much worse in her recent showing in San Diego where she had made the semifinal after starting out as a qualifier.

Still, it wasn’t expected to be much of a clash with Keys starting out a 3/10 favourite with bet365 to win it.

Instead, Navarro started off in a blistering fashion and then held on gamely when the tide turned to clinch a straight-set win over her opponent.

In the first set, Navarro broke Keys three times to grab an easy win and even when the senior American went 2-0 up in the second, Navarro did not let go. She broke back twice, lost her serve in the 10th game only to run away with the tie-breaker.

In doing so, Navarro has already climbed up to her career-best ranking of 43rd at the moment. Another victory here will propel her into the top 40 for the first time and at 1/1 odds (with bet365), she will have a chance.

Fernandez v Navarro Prediction and Tip

Fernandez holds a slight edge but we think Navarro could have a surprise up her sleeve. Given her performance against Keys it would make her believe she is capable of a lot more and we can back her for a win here.
