Ekaterina Alexandrova v Caroline Dolehide Head to Head

Alexandrova in a Tough Tussle with Frech

While it turned out to be a straight-set win in the end, Alexandrova was made to work for every point by her second round opponent, Magdalena Frech. In the end, it was Alexandrova’s superior experience in such situations and quality of play that helped her edge out her opponent here.

In a match lasting two hours and six minutes, Alexandrova was able to carve out a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8) win over Frech.

Where Alexandrova’s experience helped her was in crunch situations like the one she found herself in the first set where she faced four set-points at 4-5 on her own serve. And then again in the second, when she came back from 0-2 down to force it into a tie-breaker.

Or when in that very tie-breaker, she was down two set-points before she won it off her third match-point.

Alexandrova was involved in two tie-breakers in her previous match at San Diego as well, and while she had gone down narrowly to Jelena Ostapenko, her performance here will leave her in a good stead as she starts off a 3/10 favourite (at bet365) to win this.

Dolehide Edges Out Vickery

In a match between two players who were both equally favourite – or underdogs – heading into it, Dolehide managed to skip through with a three-set win over Sachia Vickery.

Dolehide needed nearly two hours of court time as she came through 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 against her 175th-ranked opponent.

Where Dolehide seemed to have scored over Vickery is her ability to maintain her nerves under pressure as she saved 11 of the 13 break-points she faced. In turn, Dolehide also broke Vickery five times – including three times in the decider – to grab the win.

This follows a shock win over Peyton Stearns in the first round of this competition but against Alexandrova, it could well be a case of a bridge too far. Which is also why bet365 is offering 27/10 for her win here.
