Varillas Eases Past Cui
Jie Cui hasn’t done too much of note at the highest level and while Varillas’ career performances have so far been restricted to clay, he took full advantage of his opponent’s lack of experience in their opener in Chengdu.
Varillas needed only an hour and 17 minutes to cruise through a win over his 583rd-ranked opponent, setting up a far tougher match-up against Dimitrov in the process.
In a match in which Varillas did not face a single break-point he got over the line by breaking Cui four times as he raced to a 6-1, 6-3 victory. This followed his second round appearance at the US Open and a couple of Davis Cup wins last week while playing Norway.
Against Dimitrov there is no doubting that Varillas will have his work cut out. That’s reflected in the odds too with bet365 offering 12/5 for his victory.
