This is the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour.
Zverev Hoping for a Positive Start on Clay
Zverev, who is starting the tournament as the top seed, has so far had a rather average season by his standards.
In the Australian Open, he reached the fourth round while in the Mexican Open, he went as far as the final before losing to Nick Kyrgios. His performance in the Sunshine Doubles too was highly underwhelming, seeing that he lost early in Indian Wells and Miami.
But more than that, it is the defeats that are rather surprising in nature. In Indian Wells, he succumbed to Jan-Lennard Struff while in Miami, he lost to David Ferrer – a veteran tennis giant who has been struggling with a massive loss in form of late.
However, Zverev has done enough to stay in the top three, following a superb 2018 season. With four titles and two runner-up trophies, he is a formidable opponent for any player on the tour.
Istomin’s Struggles with Form
Istomin, who has won only two singles titles in his career, is currently ranked in the early 100s. His season so far hasn’t been that exciting, with early defeats in most of the events he has played in.
He lost in the first round in ATP Pune, Melbourne, and ATP Sofia before getting some kind of traction on the tour. Even then, the best he could do was reach the second round New York and Delray Beach. The Uzbek also featured in a couple of Challenger events in Indian Wells and Phoenix but to little avail.
His last major event was the Miami Masters where he lost in the qualifying rounds to Lukas Lacko.
Zverev v Istomin Predictions & Tips
This should end in an easy win for the German. His track record so far this season has been much better than that of Istomin’s. Moreover, Zverev is quite formidable on clay and it will be difficult for Istomin to defeat a player of such great caliber.
