Dusan Lajovic v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between the Serb, who is 33 years old, and the Australian, four years his junior.

Lajovic Made to Work by Wildcard

Lajovic will have warm memories form Chengdu from his last visit in 2019 – he won the doubles here with his partner, Nikola Cacic.

He has also won on the main tour this year, collecting the inaugural title in Banja Luka in April.

That, though, was on clay, and he gets out of his comfort zone when he moves to other surfaces.

It meant he only entered two tournaments during the North American hard court swing, coming through qualifying to make the third round in Cincinnati, but exiting at the first round stage of the US, losing a five set match to Yibing Wu of China.

Nor did he have things all his own way in the first round against the Belgian wildcard, Zizou Bergs, although he began well enough, an early break enabling him to take the first set.

Bergs, though, hit back in some style, sweeping through the second set, for the loss of just one game.

Fortunately for the Serb, he was able to regain his composure, and a break midway through the third set put him in a position from which he was able to go on and win the match.

Thompson Beats Familiar First Round Foe

Thompson is a player whose form and ranking, has fluctuated wildly over the years.

Once ranked as high as 43 in the world in 2019, he then suffered several years in the relative doldrum, before experiencing something of a career renaissance this year, which saw him finish runner-up in Rosmalen for the second time (the same fate had befallen him four years earlier).

He was also a winner of the doubles at the Men’s Clay Court Championship in April, and a runner-up in Atlanta.

The following week he went to Washington and reached the semi-finals in the singles before losing to Taylor Fritz.

His hopes of a deep run at the US Open came to nothing as he had to retire from his first round match with Botic van der Zandschulp with an injury, but he faced a familiar face across the net in his first round match in Chengdu in the form of Max Purcell, his Davis Cup team mate.

And it was Thompson who emerged with the bragging rights after taking the first set courtesy of two breaks of serve.

The second set developed into a mini epic after it went to a tie-break, with Purcell having four set points to level the match. He could not take any of them, whilst Thompson proved to be much more ruthless, converting a match point when it presented itself to him.

Lajovic v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Thompson’s greater comfort with playing on hard courts makes him the clear favourite for this match, against an opponent who is out of his comfort zone away from clay.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Thompson to win: 1/2 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 23.5 games in the match: 8/11 (with bet365)
