Can Etcheverry Reach a Hard-Court Quarterfinal?
Etcheverry comfortably overcame Luke Saville 6-4, 6-4, in the first round. He had the advantage in the rallies and created eleven break point opportunities.
This victory follows two impressive hard performances at the US Open, where he defeated Virtanen in the first round and pushed Wawrinka to a fourth set.
He’s mainly known as a clay courter, who reached: two finals, one semi-final and two quarterfinals in clay ATP Tour events this season. The most notable, being his run at the French Open, where he beat Draper, de Minaur, Coric, and Nishioka, before eventually losing to Alexander Zverev.
Before becoming a regular on the main tour, he played almost exclusively Challenger events on clay and avoided hard courts as much as possible. This explains his losing ATP record of 5-13 on hard courts.
His poor hard-court performances this year, can partially be attributed to some tough first and second rough opponents at the slams and hard court Masters 1000 events: Djokovic, Wawrinka, Sinner and Andy Murray aren’t exactly what you would call ‘favourable opponents’.

It’s a Big Ask for Svrcina to Win
Svrcina had no issues getting past wild card, Zhe Li, in the first round. It marks his second ATP Tour level win. He looked solid throughout and made an impressive 78% of first serves, resulting in his opponent winning a mere 14 receiving points.
The second round will be a big step up for the young Czech, with his Etcheverry ranked 567 places higher than his previous opponent.
He too prefers clay and has a concerning record of 2-6 in Challenger level hard court matches. This hasn’t gone unnoticed and is probably a major contributing factor as for why he goes into this encounter a heavy underdog at 5/2 (with bet365).
I’m sure he will be aware of Etcheverry’s vulnerability on hard courts and may therefore consider him a fortunate opponent to be facing in the second round.
Etcheverry v Svrcina Prediction and Tip
I expect Etcheverry to be too strong and experienced for Svrcina to handle. We don’t have much to go off regarding how close the match may be but it does look like Etcheverry might prevail in the end.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Etcheverry to win: 3/10 (with bet365)
