Alejandro Davidovich Fokina v Francisco Cerundolo Head to Head

Fokina and Cerundolo have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Fokina Returns from Under-Par Davis Cup Showing

Fokina enters the Laver Cup after having struggled through his previous team event, the Davis Cup. Representing Spain in that competition last week, Fokina was put to the sword by Jiri Lehecka and Novak Djokovic before he finally managed a win over Soon woo Kwon in his third match.

This isn’t to say that Fokina hasn’t had a decent season. Far from it.

While the Spaniard is yet to win an ATP title in his career, he did make the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Masters earlier this season and then again in the Barcelona Open.

And after having fallen in the second round of the Australian Open, Fokina got to the third round at each of the three Grand Slams that followed this year. At the US Open, Fokina had defeated Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Francisco’s brother to get there.

Can he now live up to those 4/6 odds (with bet365) to clinch a point for Team Europe?

Cerundolo’s Best Ranking Came This Season

Having fallen to 33rd in the world earlier this year, Cerundolo has slowly, but surely made his way back to playing some of his best tennis and as a result of that, broke into the top 20 for the first time in his career in June.

Not surprisingly, this has been thanks to his performances on clay, Cerundolo’s most favourite surface by some distance.

The Argentine made the Rome Masters quarterfinals, was a finalist in Lyon and then entered the fourth round at the French Open to help him jump up the charts.

He would then go on to win a title in Eastbourne, a surprise win considering it came on grass. Since then, however, Cerundolo’s win-loss record has been slightly underwhelming at 5-6 thanks to the change of the surfaces to hardcourts.

And that’s where he might have a problem coming into this encounter as he faces Fokina on a quick indoor hardcourt in Canada.

Cerundolo is 11/10 (with bet365) to win this.
