In May last season, Shelton was ranked 548th in the world, trying to garner a win here and one there.
Fast forward 15 months or so, and here we are with Shelton having broken in the top 20 of the ATP Rankings aged just 20.
And this has been thanks to his performances in Grand Slam tennis with Shelton having made the quarterfinal of the Australian Open and then rounded up his season with a semifinal appearance at the US Open.
What’s been fascinating to see is that other than these nine wins over these two tournaments, Shelton has won just eight main draw matches over a period of nine months! It’s an indicator of the raw talent that Shelton possesses which can be nurtured into something spectacular in the times to come.

Fils Has Had a Season to Remember
While Fils cannot hold a candle to Shelton in terms of either his performances at Grand Slams or the dramatic change in his rankings, he has done well enough to climb up the ATP ladder too.
Fils himself was outside the top 250 on the ATP charts at the start of the season but has won a clay court title in Lyon, a Challenger title in Oeiras other than making it to the semifinals of the Montpellier Open and Marseille Open on indoor hardcourt surfaces.
The Frenchman would have liked to do better than he eventually did on the hardcourts of North America in the lead-up to the US Open though. Over the three tournaments he played in Cincinnati, Winston-Salem and the US Open, Fils won just one main draw match.
That being said, these are very early days for Fils and the 19-year-old will hope to use this experience at the Laver Cup for bigger things in the seasons to come. He starts off an 11/8 underdog with bet365 in this encounter.
