Jordan Thompson v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

Their only meeting at the highest level of tennis came earlier this year in Adelaide and Thompson had won that qualifier in straight sets. Before that, they had also faced off in a Challenger competition in 2015 where Safiullin had needed three sets to get past Thompson.

Thompson Eases Past Lajovic

While Dusan Lajovic put up a brave front in the second set of his second round match against Thompson, it was the Aussie who came through in straight sets in the end.

In a match that lasted an hour and 30 minutes in the end, Thompson defeated Lajovic 6-1, 7-6 (1) to make it to the second round.

What made it even more fascinating was Thompson did not face a single break-point in the entire encounter, losing a mere seven points on serve in the match. On the other hand, he broke his opponent three – all of which came in the first set – and then followed it up with a solid second set tie-breaker as well.

This follows a similar first round win over Max Purcell in which Thompson had an easy opening set before needing a difficult second set tie-breaker to clinch the tie. He will start off an 8/11 favourite to win this with bet365.

Safiullin Tames Evans

There wasn’t much to choose between Safiullin and Dan Evans when they faced off in their second round match. That Safiullin came through and did that in such fine style was ample testimony to his much-improved performance in this tournament after having made the quarterfinal at Wimbledon earlier this season.

Safiullin needed an hour and 20 minutes in which he overcame Evans 6-3, 6-3 to make it to the quarterfinals.

The two players traded service breaks in the first three games of the opening set but from that point onward it was more or less one way traffic. Safiullin broke Evans again and saved three break-points on his way to clinching the opening set.

In the second set, an early break of serve put Safiullin in front before he broke Evans yet again as he served to stay in the match at 3-5.

The Russian will now hope he can overturn the 13/10 odds on offer for his win with bet365.

Thompson v Safiullin Prediction and Tip
