Grigor Dimitrov v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head

The pair have played twice before.

Dimitrov won their first round match at the Australian Open in 2017, and, earlier this year, also won on the clay of Geneva.

Dimitrov Sloppy in Victory over Peruvian

It has been nearly six years since Dimitrov won the last of his eight career titles, beating Novak Djokovic to win the ATP finals of 2017 in London.

But he reached only his second final since then in May in Geneva, and has enjoyed a solid year on tour, reaching the fourth round of both the French Open and Wimbledon.

The Bulgarian did not get quite as far in New York, with his US Open participation ended at the third round stage by Alexander Zverev (the top seed in this tournament).

Courtesy of his seeding, he was given a first round bye, and was then drawn against Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru, the world number 70, a man more at home on a clay court.

The first set can best be described as scrappy with five dropped service games. Fortunately for the Bulgarian he lost his serve less than his opponent, and he was able to claim the set.

In the third game of the second set, Dimitrov broke to love, only to give the advantage straight back by dropping his own serve again.

Varillas, though, gave him another chance by dropping his service again, and this time, Dimitrov did not let the opportunity slip, and served out.

Another Quarter-Final for O’Connell

O’Connell has reached his fourth quarter-final of the year, having previously reached this stage in Qatar, Morocco and Munich, although it was only in Germany that he was able to go further than that, defeating Zverev before eventually losing to Holgar Rune.

Winning a Challenger tournament in Shanghai earlier this month gave him a taste for playing on Chinese soil, and, so far, he has been able to carry that form through to this tournament.

In truth, his first round opponent, Alibek Kachmanov, the world number 319, was the not the toughest he might have faced.

Still he needed a tie-break in the first set, and then twice had to come from a set down in the second before he could finally advance.

Taro Daniel, the world number 95 was next up, and he was not ready to make life easier for the Australian either.

The first set became a battle, with O’Connell unable to convert two set points and prevent it going to a tie-break. Each man then had set points before O’Connell was finally able to convert one of them.

An early break gave O’Connell control of the second set, but Daniel refused to give up. Serving for the match, O’Connell saw four match points come and go, and had to save three break points himself.

He will have been grateful to make his fifth match point count at last.

Dimitrov v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

The history of meeting between these two makes Dimitrov the favourite for this match.

Neither, though, has been convincing so far during their time in Chengdu, and both will be looking for an improved performance in this match.

  • Low Risk Tip: Dimitrov to win: 5/7 (with bet365)
