Daria Kasatkina v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these players and Kostyuk is a surprise leader of the pack with a 2-1 head to head record. All three matches came on different surfaces with Kasatkina’s only win having come on grass in 2021.

Having been out of action for nearly a month, Kasatkina now returns to competitive tennis with her first round match against a tricky opposition here in Tokyo.
Kasatkina might be a teeny weeny rusty but she would also be well-rested having played in 53 matches already this season. And she is also coming off some solid displays this hardcourt swing post Wimbledon.
Sure, Kasatkina was sent packing from the Washington Open second round but that was followed by three sound showings in which she finished with a win-loss record of 8-3. A fourth round appearance at the US Open was a part of this.
While Kasatkina would have liked to do a lot better than at Flushing Meadows, her loss came at the hands of the world number one Aryna Sabalenka – a consolation if ever there was one.

Kostyuk in Recent Struggles
Things had begun to look good for Kostyuk when she made the third round at Wimbledon and then reached the quarterfinal of the Washington Open after that. Since that result, however, she has caved in too easily and to opponents who have not all been top-10 players.
For instance, Kostyuk would have liked to do better against Qinwen Zheng at the Montreal Open and then against Jasmine Paolini in Cincinnati. At both, she lost in the first round and against Paolini, Kostyuk managed just three games.
More recently, Kostyuk has entered the round two of both, the San Diego Open and Guadalajara Open but not done much beyond.
While those losses came at the hands of Beatriz Haddad Maia and Jelena Ostapenko, two tricky opponents, Kostyuk will need to start overcoming better players than her own self if she wants to break past her career-best ranking of 32nd in the world.
