Donna Vekic v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

No previous meeting has taken place between Vekic and Pavlyuchenkova.

Vekic Returns after US Open Opener Exit

Vekic will improve to 20th in the world when the new rankings hit the circuit on Monday despite having not played since the US Open. And that would mean she has a brilliant chance of overtaking her own previous best ranking of 19th in the world if she can find a way to shrug off rustiness, fitness and form.

Sure, Vekic has had a decent season overall, having won 17 of her 23 matches in hardcourt competitions for 2023 but that hasn’t translated into many positive results recently.

On the North American hardcourt swing, Vekic was bundled out by Jasmine Paolini in the first round of the Montreal Open, retired from her third round match in Cincinnati because of a viral illness and then went down to Sachia Vickery in the first round of the US Open despite having taken a set lead.

Vekic enters this tournament having once been a semifinalist here. She will sure be delighted if she can repeat that feat again here but more vitally she will hope to kick things off with a solid showing against a player of the calibre of Pavlyuchenkova, making her a favourite but only just at 3/5 with bet365.

Pavlyuchenkova Has Won Just One Hardcourt Match This Season

In five outdoor hardcourt competitions that Pavlyuchenkova has played this year, she has won just one match. Some of it down to her fitness issues but to go with that, she has also struggled with form in hardcourt tennis.

Because compare that with her performance on clay and there is a marked difference.

Across all the circuits and stages of tournaments, Pavlyuchenkova has a 1-5 record in outdoor competitions, 3-2 indoors but on clay she has won 15 matches to a mere seven defeats. This includes a French Open quarterfinal appearance which was followed by a finals showing in a WTA 125 event.

Which is all the more reason why she is that short at 5/4 to win this (with bet365) – one would have probably expected a little more out of that.

Vekic v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

Vekic will be a favourite and at 3/5 looks to be a good enough punt to take against a player whose favourite surface is clay. Might see a third set.
